OverDrive FAQs
We’ve compiled a few of our most common OverDrive questions and answers all in one place. We hope they will help you solve some of the more common issues people have with OverDrive. OverDrive has a great help site with videos and step-by-step instructions for many aspects of their service. We hope that between this page and the OverDrive help site your question can be answered. Feel free to contact us if you are still stumped.
How many eBooks/audiobooks can I have checked out at a time?
12 titles can be checked out at the same time.
Can I renew an eBook/audiobook?
No. But, if no one is waiting on the book you can check it out immediately after the loan expires.
How do I place a hold?
 Click Place a Hold.
 If prompted, enter your information. Click Sign In.
 Enter your email address. Be sure to use a real address because it will be used to notify you when the title is available.
 Click Place a Hold.
 When the title is available, you’ll receive an email. The email will include a link back to the library’s OverDrive site as well as how much time you have to retrieve the title.
 Holds expire in 72 hours.
 Log in to the library’s OverDrive site. Then go to My Account > My Holds.
 Add the title to your cart, and check out.
How many holds can I have at once?
8.
How do I change my email with OverDrive?
You can change your email address in OverDrive by logging in to your account then going toMy Holds.

If you have a hold you can change the email address by selecting the Edit option on the right. Enter your new email address on the next screen. If you have multiple holds you will need to do this with each one.

If you don’t have any holds you can change your email address with OverDrive the next time you place a hold.

OverDrive will remember your previous email address until you change it. Once you change your email address, OverDrive will remember the new one.
I just got a new library card number and can’t see the holds I placed using my old library card number. How can I fix this?
Please contact support. Be sure to include your new library card number, your old library card number, and your email address. We’ll get it fixed.
How do I return an eBook?
If you are returning an ePub eBook, follow this link for device specific instructions by OverDrive.
To return a Kindle book early:
 Log in to your Amazon account and navigate to Manage My Kindle.
 You will see a list of books you have purchased from Amazon and borrowed from the library.
 To the right of the list there is an Actions icon next to each book.
 When you place your cursor over that icon a list of options will appear.
 One of those options is to return the book.
 If you click that option your book will be returned.
After they are returned they will be removed from your current checkout list within minutes.
I get a “User not activated message” when I try to read books on my Nook. How do I fix it?
1. With the Nook plugged into your computer go to Computer (or Finder on MAC).
2. Click on the Nook drive.
3. Find and delete the file .adobe-digital-editions (before deleting, place a copy on your desktop for backup).
4. Safely eject and unplug the nook from the computer.
5. Start Adobe Digital Editions.
6. Plug the Nook to the computer.
7. Adobe Digital Editions should display the Nook icon and prompt you to authorize the device.
8. If not, Close Adobe Digital Editions.
9. Go back to the Nook drive in Computer.
10. Find and delete the Digital Editions file.
11. Restart Adobe Digital Editions.
12. Adobe Digital Editions should display the Nook icon and prompt you to authorize the device.
13. Authorize the device.
14. You should be able to transfer books.
Adobe Digital Editions doesn’t see my Nook when I plug it in. How can I fix it?
There are two options: the easy way and the involved way.
The easy way:
1. Connect your Nook to your computer.
2. Open Adobe Digital Editions.
o Hopefully the Nook will show up.
o Authorize the Nook.
3. You should be able to transfer books.
The involved way:
1. With the Nook plugged into your computer go to Computer (or Finder on MAC)
2. Click on the Nook drive.
3. Find and delete the file .adobe-digital-editions (before deleting, place a copy on your desktop for backup).
4. Safely eject and unplug the nook from the computer.
5. Start Adobe Digital Editions.
6. Plug the Nook to the computer.
7. Adobe Digital Editions should display the Nook icon and prompt you to authorize the device.

I checked out a Kindle book but it didn’t download to my Kindle. What happened?
Make sure your Kindle is connected to the internet via a Wi-Fi network (not 3G) so that the books you check out from us are delivered to your Kindle quickly and easily. This link will help you connect your Kindle to Wi-Fi. Select your model and Amazon has a video tutorial with step-by-step directions.
1. Log in to your Amazon account and navigate to Manage My Kindle.
2. You will see a list of books you have purchased from Amazon and borrowed from the library.
3. To the right of the list there is an Actions icon next to each book.
4. When you place your cursor over that icon a list of options will appear.
5. Select Deliver To My…
o You should see a window pop up that gives you the chance to deliver the book to your Kindle.
o After selecting this, the book should be delivered within minutes.
I have to download some Kindle books and transfer them using a USB cable. How do I do that?
To download a book immediately after checkout:
1. Click Get for Kindle.
2. You will be directed to amazon.com
o You may be required to login to your amazon.com account if you are not already logged in.
3. Choose your Kindle.
4. The file should begin downloading within a few seconds.
5. When the download is complete you should get a message giving you some options for what to do next.
o Choose the option that lets you open the folder where the file is located.
 The book will probably be downloaded to the Downloads folder.
6. Click and drag the file to your Desktop or someplace where you can find it quickly.
7. Plug in the USB Cable that came with your Kindle into both the Kindle and your Computer.
8. Go to Computer.
o Your Kindle should show up as a Storage Device.
9. Open the Kindle Drive by double-clicking the icon.
o There will be several folders.
10. Open the Documents folder by double-clicking the icon.
11. Click and drag the file(s) to that folder.
12. Unplug your Kindle.
o The book should be near the top of the list of books on your Kindle.
To download a book from ‘Manage Your Kindle’:
1. Log in to your Amazon account and navigate to Manage Your Kindle.
2. You will see a list of books you have purchased from Amazon and borrowed from the library.

o When you place your cursor over that icon a list of options will appear.
3. Find the Book you want to transfer to your Kindle.
o Choose the USB option from the drop Actions menu.
4. Select your Kindle when you are asked which Kindle you will be transferring the book to.
5. The file should begin downloading within a few seconds.
6. When the download is complete you should get a message giving you some options for what to do next.
o Choose the option that lets you open the folder where the file is located.
 The book will probably be downloaded to the Downloads folder.

How do I delete a title from my Kindle after I’ve read it?
Kindle 2nd Generation
1. If you are not already on the Home screen, press the Home button.
2. Underline the book you want to delete.
3. Move the 5-way controller to the left.
4. Select Delete.
Kindle Keyboard
1. If you are not already on the Home screen, press the Home button.
2. Underline the item you want to remove with the 5-way controller.
3. Move the controller to the left and select Remove from device.
Kindle
1. If you are not already on the Home screen, press the Home button.
2. Underline the item you want to remove with the 5-way controller.
3. Move the controller to the left and select Remove from device.
Kindle Touch
1. From the Home screen, press and hold the item.
2. Select Move to Archived Items or other appropriate option (Delete this Issue, Delete Document).
Kindle Fire
If your Kindle Fire has the latest software version available, you can remove an item/title from your carousel by tapping and holding on the item, then selecting Remove from Carousel.
